What's a Dental Implant?

A dental implant can be used to replace a missing tooth or to keep a denture plate in place. Implants are durable, lasting restorations that rely on a process known as osseointegration to naturally fuse with the bone of your jaw. We offer many different implant options that are suitable for your needs and dental health. We can perform the implant surgery in-office as well as provide help in implant restoration as needed.

Dr. Gohel explains what a dental implant is and how it works.

Who is a good candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants require oral surgery to insert properly. You will need to be healthy enough to undergo oral surgery so that the implant heals successfully. Bone grafts may be required before the procedure is done if there is not enough bone in the area. You will will need to come in for a consultation before the implants can be inserted.

Why are Dental Implants needed?

Most often, a dental implant is needed because a tooth has either fallen out or been extracted. The implant is surgically placed into this area and a crown placed on top. This prevents the need for a fixed bridge or partial denture just to replace the missing tooth. Likewise, implants can be used to keep a denture securely in place throughout the day without the need for pastes and gels.

What can you expect with the Dental Implant procedure?

To begin, a consult and exam are required to determine if implants are right for you. You will then be scheduled for the surgery itself and will be given information on what to expect. A tiny incision is made through the gums to expose the bone underneath. The implant post is inserted into the bone and given time to heal. The implant will fuse and bond with the bone in about six months, though this time may be longer or shorter for some patients. You will then need to have a dental crown made to be placed on top of the newly healed implant.
